Steamed oranges with salt is a traditional Chinese folk diet therapy. It is suitable for people with wind-heat attacking the lungs or dryness damaging the lungs, with the main symptoms of dry cough with little sputum, dry and itchy throat, yellow and sticky sputum. It also has an auxiliary therapeutic effect on irritating coughs left over from colds, chronic bronchitis, and pharyngitis.
Orange: slightly cool in nature, sweet and sour in taste, enters the lung and stomach meridians. “Dietary Therapy Materia Medica” records that it “quenches thirst, stimulates appetite, and detoxifies alcohol.” Orange peel contains volatile oils (such as limonene) and flavonoids, which can regulate qi, relieve fullness, resolve phlegm and relieve cough.
Salt: cold in nature and salty in taste, enters the kidney meridian, can clear away heat and detoxify, and guide fire downward. Salting can soften orange peel fiber, promote the dissolution of effective ingredients such as hesperidin, and enhance the effect of resolving phlegm.
By steaming, the orange is gently heated by steam, which not only retains the lung-moistening effect of oranges, but also avoids the coldness that hurts the stomach. It is especially suitable for the elderly, children and those with weak spleen and stomach.
