In the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, yam belongs to the category of “medicine and food come from the same source” and can be used as both medicine and food. “Compendium of Materia Medica” records: “Yam can replenish deficiency and weakness, remove evil qi, tonify the body and strengthen the body, grow muscles, and long-term use can make the ears and eyes brighter, prevent hunger, and prolong life.” It can be seen that yam is a mild and comprehensive tonic food.

From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, yam is mild in nature and sweet in taste. It returns to the spleen, lung, and kidney meridians. It has the functions of nourishing the spleen and stomach, promoting body fluids and lungs, tonifying the kidneys and strengthening essence, etc., and is suitable for recuperating various physical constitutions.

The spleen and stomach are the source of qi and blood and are particularly important among the five internal organs. Yams are a particularly good food for replenishing the spleen and stomach and can be eaten every day.

The earliest records of yam can be traced back to the “Shen Nong’s Materia Medica” written in the Eastern Han Dynasty.  In the “Shen Nong’s Materia Medica”, yam is listed as a top-grade drug, which means that it is mild in nature, non-toxic, and is beneficial and harmless when taken for a long time.
